Harlem Valley Rail Trail Brochure - Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association
An older 2023 version that has a map - the latest version does not have a map. It is mostly accurate except the orange section from Orphan Farm Meadow to Black Grocery Road which was to be constructed in 2023/2024 is not yet open.
HIKE and BIKE DISTANCES:
Goodbody and Van Ahn Preserves Hike: 5.4 miles
with
Harlem Valley Rail Trail Bike: 27.2 miles (4.3 mile drive from the preserves)
THE BIKE:
Leaving the parking lot to a right on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail...
... through Millerton.
The first two road crossings are more busy then they are few and far between with very little car traffic.
You can even grab a free bike along the way!
The scenery is mostly obscured by foliage - I had expected to be able to see more - but it's still a really nice trail.
Under Mountain Road Parking is only parking lot 8 1/5 from Millerton so where the trail can be busy near Millerton, it becomes very quite with parking lots being far apart.
There are quite a few tractor crossings ...
... worth stopping at for countryside views.
Coming up on Valley View Road ...
... the there is a break in the trail where it follows Valley View Road to the right for almost half a mile ...
... before resuming to the left when Valley View Road pavement ends.
Coming up on ...
Bish Bash Brook
I would be stopping at that little store on the left on the way back for a cold drink because with it being hotter so late in the day I was drinking more than I usually do and was needing a refill.
Shortly after crossing the Taconic State Park entrance the trail is wide open.
Coming up on Orphan Farm parking lot which is the turn around point.
Heading back.
Stopping at that store on the right.
Back on Valley View Road ...
... with valley views.
And back on the trail.
Undermountain Road Parking
The same thing happened here that happened on the hike early in the morning. A hummingbird flew in from the left, hovered in front of me for a second, then took off to the right.
This little guy didn't take off. I stopped for a drink and watched him as he would duck into his hidey hole when a bike went by then pop back out on to the trail. So cute.
Coming back into Millerton.
Left back into ...
... the parking lot.
