DIRECTIONS:
GPS Coordinates 40.75225, -75.60452
D & L Trail Slatington Trailhead

TRAIL MAPS:
Trail Section: Walnutport Canal Spur
Slate Heritage Trail - The Northern Lehigh Historical Society

BIKE DISTANCE:  34.7 miles

THE BIKE:
From the parking lot heading away from town just a short distance to ...
... a right on the Slate Heritage Trail.
The trail follows along Trout Creek.
The trail is paved until this bridge over ...
... Trout Creek then ...
... it's crushed stone the rest of the way.
The trail ends at a park and a huge parking lot.
Heading back.
Back at the D&L Trail ...
... left to the parking lot.
Passing by the parking lot then ...
... right on Main Street over the Lehigh River.
The first right after the bridge on Lehigh Street then left directly across from the Walnutport Trailhead parking ...
... to a right on the Walnutport Spur.
There were lots of unusual looking ducks throughout the Walnutport area.  I am thinking mallard hybrids?
The canal on the left and the Lehigh River on the right.
At the end of this section.
Heading back.
At the end of the trail in town, keeping to the left of this structure ...
... leads to the continuation of the Walnutport Spur on the other side of Main Street.
Now the canal is on the right and the Lehigh River on the left.
At the end of this section ...
... views of Lehigh Gap where the Appalachian Trail goes across the two mountains via the bridge.
Heading back.
At Main Street ...
... right across the bridge ...
... then right on the D&L Trail across from the Slatington parking lot.
Now heading north on the D&L Trail.
Lehigh Gap Nature Center on the left.
Lehigh River
East Penn Parking
Watch for the D&L signs to navigate through Marvin Gardens...
... back on to the trail.
The trail turns into paved Lehigh Drive the rest of the way into Lehighton.
The ramp on the left is where the D&L Trail continues up and over the bridge into Weissport but for me that is for another time.
Keeping straight on the Lehighton Spur to the end.
There is a parking lot at the end of the spur - I headed to the liquor store on the right but no adult beverage for me with 10 miles left to go and an almost 2 hour drive home.  A can of cold iced tea it was.
Heading back.
At this crossing I pushed the button for the blinky lights and they were working but I saw a pickup pulling a huge camper barreling down from the right so I waited because it did not look like he was going to stop.  He did not and neither did the three cars behind him.
Then coming up on the next crossing with no blinky lights, that truck up ahead stopped for the two bikers getting ready to cross.  I figured he would go on since I was still a distance away but he did not.  He sat and waited for me to get there and cross.  What a nice guy!  So you just never know.
Back at Main Street there is lots of traffic but cars did stop to let people cross back to the parking lot.
