THE HIKE:
After the historic blizzard of February 22–24, 2026 it was challenging to find a place to hike so I honed in on this green area that had very little snow after some warmer weather during the week:

This is what the snow depth looked like right after the blizzard:

A cute little sparrow in the parking lot.
Heading back towards Flint Road to the kiosk where the trails start.
First heading around to the right on yellow/red to hike the small loop this side of Flint Road.
Probably about the first 50 steps into the hike coming up on these trees, a bird flew over from left to right and landed up in that tallest tree straight ahead.
It was challenging to get any kind of focus because of branches but I was able to back up enough for a clear shot.  I'd be seeing this eagle (or it's mate) at the end of the hike again.
I had noticed this tree from the road on the drive in.  It definitely stands out.
A 150-year-old oak tree.
A red-bellied woodpecker in a different tree.
Crossing Flint Road to the trails on the other side.
Eastern bluebird scouting out real estate for spring nesting?
We left the red trail to take the purple trail and meet back up with red later.
We came upon a creek crossing with no bridge and that ice did not look very stable so we turned back and approached a different way.
This way came up on a creek crossing too but the ice was rock solid and had it not held up, the water was very shallow here with mostly rocks.  We made it across.
Eastern bluebirds everywhere.
Meeting back up with red.
There were tons of robins around.  A sign of spring?
The red trail goes around to the right of this hill then up along the hill and down the other side.
Leaving Bryn Coed Preserve and entering Opalanie Park.
We turned right to loop around counterclockwise.
Coming up at the entrance of Opalanie Park we grabbed a picnic table for a break and for me to shed some layers.
Heading over to the crosswalk to meet back up with the red trail and ...
... cross Saint Matthews Road back into Bryn Coed Preserve.
Crossing Flowing Springs Road.
Taking the purple trail that goes into the woods.
This comes out at the Beaver Hill Road parking lot and around to the right of the lot ...
... a short paved path to ...
... an overlook.
An unmarked mowed path to the right leads down to meet back up with the red trail.
Back on the red trail.
After crossing Flint Road ...
... the red trail parallels Flint Road for a bit ...
... then is on Flint Road where there is very little traffic.  Something caught my eye way over to the right across that field ...
It's that eagle from earlier (or it's mate) and I say that because ...
... there is a nest to the left.  You can see the eagle way up in that tree on the right.  And the eagle I saw at the beginning of the hike had come from this direction.
It's not much farther back to the parking lot.
