1.4 miles (This hike was done in conjunction with the Bruce Lake Natural Area hike about 3 miles away.)

| Turning right at the kiosk for a counter clockwise loop, the trail starts off as a wide woods road. |

| The map is not clear on this but a blue-blazed trail crosses over the woods road. I turned right and followed the blue-blazed trail the rest of the way because it runs closer to the lake, yet it is terribly overgrown in places. |

HIKE SUMMARY:
[ 0.00] From parking cross bridge
[ 0.10] Turn right at kiosk; keep right at trail intersection a few steps ahead
[ 0.30] Wide woods road becomes more narrow footpath
[ 0.55] Turn right on blue-blazed trail when it crosses over
[ 0.85] Trail makes sharp left turn (unmarked) where straight dead ends in rhododendron thicket; in a few steps turn right as blue trail joins woods road coming in from left
[ 1.05] Keep right on blue when woods road leaves to the left
[ 1.30] Turn right when blue joins woods road
[ 1.35] Keep right when trail forks to left at intersection post 111; turn right at kiosk to bridge
[ 1.40] Back at parking lot
love your hiking blogs, the squirrel pic you took is a red squirrel, flying squirrels look a bit different and are mainly nocturnal. I've seen flying squirrel's a number of times at night with a flashlight however i've yet to see a red squirrel in northern nj, probably cause of the loss of hemlock forests.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nick, and thanks for the squirrel ID - at least I got the "squirrel" part right! The reason I went with flying squirrel is that he has that ridge down his side where the loose skin is on a flying squirrel but you are right, this one does look somewhat different.

This is right down the street from the cabin my grandparents had in the 70s and 80s. I think the last time I stayed there I was 8 or 9 and have great memories of this little hike. We went back a few years ago and met the couple who bought and renovated it. They were happy to meet relatives of the owners as they had some items they found in the attic. They were also eager to show us the wall they built using stones form the large fireplace they took down.
