Delaware Water Gap NRA, PA - McDade Trail from Riverview to 2.5 Mile Post

ABOUT THE PARK:
McDade Recreation Trail - National Park Service

DIRECTIONS:
GPS Coordinates 41.04962, -75.02450
Parking right at the trail crossing.

TRAIL MAP:
Kittatinny Trails Map #120 - New York New Jersey Trail Conference

HIKE DISTANCE:  3.8 miles (1.9 miles each way)
Hiked together with Hidden Lake - 2 miles (about a 3 mile drive away)

THE HIKE:
We headed towards Smithfield and turned around at the 2.5 mile marker.  Another quarter of a mile and dogs aren't allowed from there to Hialeah.
Several side trails lead to views of the Delaware River.
She wouldn't eat her favorite chicken jerky on the last hike so she wasn't feeling well with her bum leg.  She snarfed it right down today.
Not pleased that I tied her up to go down a short side trail to take pictures.
Turtle Beach on the other side of the Delaware River.
Our turn around point.
She wore a hole in her bootie from dragging her toes.  This is why one should always carry duct tape.
Break time.
Taking a little power nap before we finish.
The trail was starting to get busy.
Turtles in the Delaware River.
Getting tired.  I had wanted to turn around at the 3-mile marker but it was missing so we ended up going a mile farther than planned.
Back at the car.

  1. Really beautiful. Your dog seems to be wheeling along pretty good in her new contraption. Enjoy the last days of summer.

  2. When I didn't see a post from you on Sunday or Monday I was worried something happened to Shawnee. So Glad she is doing okay. That's quite a contraption you have for her but that's so nice to see that she can still hike with you. You got some beautiful photos especially the full moon, the flowers and the turtle. I am familiar with that area but wasn't aware there was a short hike there. I might try that one sometime. Thanks for sharing! I hope Shawnee has many more hikes with you. Joanne from NJ

    1. Thanks, Joanne. It was way too hot even for me that weekend so neither of us went.

  3. Wow -- what gorgeous pictures of the Delaware River...looks so clean up there compared to areas closer to Philadelphia! The Hidden Lake shots were excellent as well!

But, like everyone else, I've gotta tip my hat (even though I'm not wearing one) to the star of the show...Shawnee! Like most other posters, I was a little saddened to see the picture of Shawnee when her back leg gave out, but my spirits were brightened when I saw the contraption/"wheelchair" you bought for her. Finally, the two hikes on Tuesday burned away any doubt I may have had about Shawnee being able to still do significant hikes...{aw, who am I kidding -- I *knew* she'd be just fine!} Not only did she appear to take to the wheelchair -- she showed dogs all over the world how it's done! Funny -- just as soon as I began wondering if she'd be able to go in the water with it (it's still summer, you know!)...lo and behold -- there's your picture to prove it!

I'm so glad you went hiking again on Tuesday, and didn't make us all wait till this weekend to see how the wheelchair would work out. I'll leave you with three words...

    GO, SHAWNEE GO!!

    1. Thanks, Jim, and LOL! But yes, I feel the same as you, just thrilled that this is working out for her and extending her hiking time.
